Comic Relief has just acquired a full run of the seminal comic book title Famous Funnies, the first regularly published newsstand comic book title, which ran from 1934 to 1955. It’s almost impossible to exaggerate the importance of this series, which established once and for all that there was a market outside the pages of newspapers for our favorite form of entertainment.

We have all 218 issues in the store right now–certainly one of a very few complete runs in existence. Every issue is included: #1 and #2, listed as “RARE” in the Overstreet Price Guide, issue #27, the first true crime comic, issue #102 with Hitler/Mussolini/Tojo caricatures on the cover, all the issues between #209 and #216 with their fantastic Frank Frazetta covers, and everything in between.

Condition varies from FA/G to VFNM, averaging around VG/Fine–surprisingly high for such a large group of Golden Age (and pre-Golden Age!) comics. Most issues, including many of the oldest, have off white to white pages with very little browning.

If you’re a strips collector, a lover of ‘30s and ‘40s pop culture, a devotee of early comic book history, a Frazetta fan—or if you just want to take a look at a 75 year old comic book, stop by the back counter.
